25 Gifts Any Wine Lover Will Love!
The "Sommelier's Arsenal"
- Quality Electric Wine Opener (Coravin, NuSommelier) - For preserving and pouring without pulling the cork. A game-changer for higher-end bottles, because exspensive bottles are worth slowly savoring. Don't waste one drop of it.
- Professional-Grade Waiter's Corkscrew (Pulltap's, Durand) - The classic, reliable tool every enthusiast should master. I love this brand. They have funky eclectic styles that make the gift extra fun, and can match many different personalities. Also, most people have a junky corkscrew and a fancy corkscrew, but sometimes you just need that fun and nice corckscrew that your bestie got you for your 50th birthday.
- Aerator/Pourer (Vinturi, SOMMi) - Instantly opens up a wine's aromas and flavors as you pour.
- Premium Wine Glasses - The right glass (Bordeaux, Burgundy, Universal) dramatically enhances the tasting experience. This is a pricey endeavor, but the right person will appreciate this gift. Highest Price Range Classic Style: Zalto. Lower Price Range. Great gift for newly weds: Gabriel-Glas.
- Wine Preservation System -For enjoying a glass without committing to the whole bottle. Coravin (electric). Golden and Unique Eto.
- Wine Thermometer & Chiller (Corkcicle) - Ensures reds and whites are served at their perfect temperature. Corkcicle wine chiller. Corckcicle Stemless tumbler.
- Decanter (A stylish design or a functional "duck" decanter) - Essential for breathing and serving older reds or bold young wines. Decanters I love. Classic Style. Fun and Funky
Knowledge & Curation
- Wine Club Subscription (Firstleaf, Winc, or a specialized club from a favorite region like Napa, Bordeaux, or Piedmont) - A gift that keeps delivering discovery. A local Chicago Wine Clubs that my husband and I have tried and really loved. Uncorck and Unwind in Des Plaines is a local woman owned wine bar which offers a monthly wine club that includes 2 bottles of which ever region they are featuring. In my opinion, not only is this very affordable, but it lets you try different wines from around the world, while supporting a local business. We've also been Cooper's Hawk Subscribers, and that is fine. It's nothing super special, but the wine is good, and if you like having a local place to eat good food, and get a decent wine tasting, it's a good deal. Our favorite wine club to ever be a part of was a California Winery called Banshee. Their wines were very good, yet affordable, and they always added a little extra to their monthly club. For example, the first shipment came with a CD/mixed tape. They have since been bought buy a larger company, so I'm not sure you'll get the same experience as we did, but they wine is very good. We've also been a subscriber of Judd's Hill. That is like a gym subscription that we should have cancelled, but can't for some reason. LOL. Great wine though, good deal.
- Coffee Table Book ("The World Atlas of Wine," "Wine Folly," "Wine Pairing for the People: The Communion of Wine, Food, and Culture from Africa and Beyond (A Certified Sommelier on Pairing Wines with Diverse Cuisines") - Beautiful and informative.
- Online Tasting Kit/Virtual Sommelier Session - A guided experience with a sommelier, often including shipped sample bottles.
- Wine Journal/App Subscription (CellarTracker Pro, Vivino Premium) - To track tasting notes, ratings, and the cellar inventory. We have never tried an App for wine tasting, but some people love it. My husband loves his wine journal. When we have a nice bottle of wine it's usually for a special occasion or we had a long week and deserve something nice at the end of it, and it's always nice to write not only the taste of the wine, but why we were drinking it, and then years later going back through it and remembering those days. One wine that we always go back to in the book is from a winery called Madrigal. It's a small winery in Napa Valley that we accidentally found on our bike tour, and we love the musical theme around the bottle. We are theater people and singers at heart, and every theater person goes through a period of their life singing madrigal music at some point, not to mention it fully reminded us of Shakespeare. Finding that random small winery at the end of a long day of biking and drinking felt unique and kismet. It will always be a wine and an experience that is fun to think about as we look through our wine journal. Wine Journal.
The Home Cellar & Storage
- Wine Refrigerator (EuroCave, Liebherr, or a quality dual-zone model) - The ultimate gift for proper storage and aging. You can get a wine fridge at a decent price just about anywhere, we have even bought our first one on Facebook market place, and....11 year later IT STILL WORKS! But if you really want to wow someone, and you are buying expensive bottles, then you should have a proper place to keep it. EuroCave is a Top Quality Fridge. Comes in many sizes. Amazon Favorite. A third fridge that has high reviews and is lower in price.
- Wine Rack - A modern, minimalist wall rack or a large freestanding unit for the basement. I thought my husband was insane when he insisted that we have a wine rack and a blue light for the wine, but here were are, with a small wooden wine rack under the stairs in a dark part of the basement with a blue light. It's not fancy, but until we can afford to make a fancy section of basement, it does the job and keeps our nicer wines preserved. Wooden floor wrack. Wall wrack
- Wine Cellar Tags You can get a software that will help you organize your wine, but I feel like this is something you can't gift someone. People organize in their own way. However, there are fun ways to stay organized that aren't so intense. The Wine Tag is it.
Experiential & Luxurious
- Wine Country Trip (A weekend in Napa/Sonoma, Willamette Valley, Finger Lakes, or even a dream trip to France/Italy). I have the dream team Travel agents for you in this area. Jill Taylor and Peter Tibble, are the best Luxury trip planners you could ask for. They create award winning trips with the very best customer service you could ever desire. JetSet World Travel.
- Local Winery Tour & Tasting (Book a private, behind-the-scenes tour at a nearby vineyard). UnCork and Unwind in Des Plaines is hands down the best. The Fig Pizza is our favorite and pairs perfectly with most wines.
- Blending Experience (At a winery or with a kit at home) to create his own custom Bordeaux or Port blend.
- Wine and Food Pairing Class (At a local restaurant or culinary school).
- "Birth Year" or "Anniversary Year" Wine - A profound and sentimental gift (requires research from a reputable auction house or retailer).
- A Rare or Iconic Bottle (A "cult" Napa Cab, a Grand Cru Burgundy, a vintage Port) for a landmark celebration.
Practical & Fun Accessories
- A Wine Flask. I bought one of these for my husband, because we are always tossing wine in random water bottles for family outings. The perfect thermos for parents who like to socially drink with other parents at events like parades, 4th of July fireworks, Backyard function, Trick or Treating, Beach day, Camping, and more.
- Insulated Wine Tote/Sling Bag (Truvelli, Opux) - For picnics, BYOB restaurants, or winery visits.
- Wine Glass Charms or Etcher - To keep glasses distinct at gatherings.
- Premium Foil Cutter (Le Creuset) - A small but satisfying luxury.
- Wine-Themed Apparel (A shirt from a favorite winery or a humorous "Wine Director" apron for grilling). My favorite fun Apron. My favorite rustic Apron.
- Cheese & Charcuterie Board Set (Smirly) - The perfect pairing companion. My husband and I are known for our Charcuterie Boards. We can't go to a family function without one. But having a good board, makes it easy.
